What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Before you break out the children’s dictionary, Search Engine Optimization is just the fancy way of saying that your website is clearly communicating its content to search engines (like Google).
Google doesn’t have time to read every website word-for-word, so it looks at the outline of your website, keywords, metadata, and a handful of other information bits to figure out the purpose and content of your web pages. If Google can understand your web pages, it is much more likely to connect them to search terms that draw customers to you.
How long does SEO take to work?
First, it depends on what your objectives are. If you are hoping to be in position 1 of the search results for all of the keywords that are related to your brand, probably never. But you can realistically target a handful of choice keywords to rank for. You can then work towards getting them on page 1, and a subset of those in position 1. Over time, your keyword count can become pretty impressive.
In order to see extensive progress, it will require a dedication of resources and time. The more resources you use to create and optimize content, build backlink relationships, and gain page authority, the less time it will take to see substantial results. Et vice versa.
Important note: there are no guarantees with SEO. Search engines have sole discretion of deciding which pages rank in certain positions for certain keywords.
How much does SEO cost?
The cost to hire an SEO consultant is widely variable. There are a variety of factors that come into play:
- What are your website goals?
- How big is your website?
- How much work is required to optimize the current content?
- Do you want ongoing SEO maintenance?
- Do you want to hire a company that specializes in SEO or does it on the side of another package that they offer?
As an FYI, SEO Brand Builders will work with your goals, website, and budget to create an SEO plan that is right for your company.
Is SEO the same as AdWords?
Nope – AdWords (or other pay per click (PPC) advertising) is a type digital advertising that temporarily appears at either the top or bottom of a search result page. While PPC can be an important piece of your digital marketing strategy, it is not the same thing as SEO.
How can I tell if my website is already optimized?
Just because you paid a website developer (an arm and a leg) to create a stunning website for you, it doesn’t mean that your website is optimized. SEO is a specialty that not every web designer is an expert in. They might have optimized some elements of your site, but unless you check behind-the-scenes and know what to look for, it is difficult to tell if the site is optimized. If things like metadata, alt text, and 404 errors are Greek to you, call me and I will check it out for you. For free.
Also, if your website is over 5 years old, it likely isn’t optimized to the current SEO standards. Google constantly changes its algorithm, so older sites go out of date quickly if they aren’t maintained.
What is the most effective SEO trick?
Good Content. Period.
While it is important to optimize all of the pieces of your web page, the most important SEO element is having good content. Making sure that your content is up-to-date, informative, and well-written is the single most important thing you can do to impact your search result performance.
